“The results and respondent comments from the 2020 survey, which coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of new regulations for brokers, highlighted that

many of our members were experiencing difficulty with time management, managing their work-life balance and generally remaining resilient in difficult times.

We’ve produced this eBook, Balancing work, life and everything else, as a resource to address these concerns and support our members as they navigate running a business with a work/life balance that allows them to succeed. It’s filled with tips and advice from a range of successful broking business owners from different walks of life, different business sizes and different stages of business growth.

We asked them about the biggest challenges they’ve faced in running a successful broking business, strategies they’ve employed to overcome these challenges and their advice to other brokers facing similar situations. We hope this resource assists you in effectively managing both your business and a balanced lifestyle.” The MFAA team.

“If your body’s not fit, your brain is not fit so we try and encourage all the staff here to take part in sport to keep fit and maintain healthy eating as well – that’s a key part of our culture.” Richard Kirby – Folio Mortgage & Finance

Having cheated death twice and now with restricted physical mobility due to a surfing accident which almost claimed his life back in 2014, Richard has faced more challenges than most, but they have never stopped him from succeeding in business and living a full life. While walking out of the surf, after a two-hour surf with his son, Ben, and long-time friend and business partner, Bruce, at Queenscliff in Sydney’s northern beaches in April 2014, Richard was struck by a breaker which caused him to fall awkwardly head-first into a sand bank, twisting his neck and pinching his spinal cord.

Unable to move, lying face down in the shallows he thought “ah well, life’s been good” and then everything went black. A few minutes later he was dragged lifeless to shore by a passer-by and the Queenscliff Surf Life Savers who sprang into action and restarted his heart with a ‘Packer Wacker’. The Westpac rescue helicopter arrived along with ambulances and paramedics. He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital and underwent emergency spinal surgery followed by a month in ICU, then three months in the Spinal Unit and a further three months at Royal Rebab in Ryde fighting to regain his mobility. His recovery was further complicated by the fact that he is an insulin dependent diabetic.

After three years and numerous injuries (including a broken hip during recovery) Richard gave back his wheelchair. In the years since his surfing accident, he tried to return to surfing, but the damage to his spinal cord was too severe. Despite this disappointment, he was able to focus on his mortgage management business which continued to grow with the support of his wife Kay, his business partner and a dedicated team. “The funny thing is I owe my life to an anonymous passer-by and the Surf Life Savers at Queenscliff, who did not want any thanks. They are our everyday heroes,” Richard said.

“It’s been seven years since my accident and there have been lots of challenges along the way in business, physically and regaining mobility – the effort is worth it as something good generally comes out at the end of the day. “There will always be a solution, sometimes you just have to be patient or be creative and wait for things to resolve themselves or settle down a bit.” His biggest ongoing challenge is his mobility and the impact it has on his time. It now takes longer to move around and the time he invests in physical therapy with Kyle, an exercise physiologist, three mornings a week has been a crucial element in regaining and maintaining some of his strength.
